JANUARY 2011 - POPPY
BREED: Jack Russell Terrier
AGE: 3 1/2
WHAT HAPPENED: Poisoning
Case Description:
Poppy came in to the vet because she had been a little off colour for the past week, she had deteriorated quickly overnight, she had a very low temperature and was conscious but not responding to her surroundings.
The veterinary surgeon immediately admitted her for further investigations to find the cause of her collapse. She was placed in blankets and was gently heated up so as not to shock her system, she was also placed on intravenous fluid therapy.
After further examination the vet found that poppy had lots of bruising under her skin, blood tests showed she was very anaemic. These signs all pointed to rat bait poisoning. The vet spoke to the owner who said it was possible that poppy had gained access to it as she was a terrier that spends time on farm. The vet commenced aggressive treatment for rat bait poisoning, including a synthetic blood replacement, as the rat bait had thinned the blood and delayed clotting times, this is why poppy had lots of bruises under her skin. Poppy was now very sick and everyone was very concerned for her.
Miraculously, after only a couple of hours poppy was starting to show signs of improvement, she was brighter and even wagged her tail when anybody walked past her kennel, it was amazing that she had fought back from the brink but in such a short time was astounding.
Poppy continued to recover and was allowed home the next day. She was nominated for the award because of her incredible revival and to remind all pet owners of the danger posed by rat bait.
