WHAT HAPPENED: Bouts of abdominal pain
Case Description:
Patch is now a year and a half old setter cross, who was first examined in October 2010 after developing what initially presented as an upset stomach. He became dehydrated and was treated with antibiotics, fluids and drugs to reduce the vomiting. He improved enough to go home but continued to suffer from bouts of abdominal pain which were sometimes so bad that he kept his owner up at night crying with pain. Patch had blood tests and x-rays which unfortunately did not identify the source of the problem, it was terrible to watch such a young dog become so lethargic and lose so much weight. Luckily Patch is insured and so he was able to have endoscopy (where a camera is fed into the stomach to directly look at it and take samples). The tests showed that Patch had an uncommon type of infection in the stomach lining, and so an intensive treatment strategy of antibiotics and a protectant for the stomach lining was begun, the treatment lasted for 3months and then he was slowly weaned off.
Patch has been awarded the brave heart award as throughout his long treatment Patch has put up with all the treatments, blood tests (despite not being very keen on needles) and pills and is now a happy healthy and very bouncy dog!
